enliven music scene

THE DISCOVERY of new stars enlivens and ensures the development of the entertainment industry, but there"s no surefire formula for success. Most of the time, in fact, it backfires, that"s why there are more one-hit wonders than consistent hit makers.

It"s cause for celebration, therefore, when an aspirant succeeds. Singers :0)- and Nina are not exactly neophytes. :0)- won the "Tanghalan ng Kampeon" grand prize at age 12, while Nina is a veteran of the band scene.


Their recent back-to-back concert, "Cold War" at Ratsky"s in Morato, serves as an inspiration for upcoming singers who are still waiting for their time to shine. My notes on the gig:

They open the show with "I"m Coming Out;" then they segue to Aretha Franklin"s not-for-the-faint-of-heart showstopper "Respect."

Both the performers and the crowd are fired up at this point. Nina delights the crowd with Patty Austin"s "Say You Love Me" and her version of Steve Perry"s "Foolish Heart."

:0)- then wails a la Alicia Keys with "Fallin." Her fans get more excited as she delivers her latest single, "I Will Be There." And everybody applauds as the Toy Symphony band plays the opening strains of Nina"s breakout tune "Jealous," and Nina re-enters the stage to sing the number with :0)-.

The cheering goes on as Nina interprets :0)-"s signature song "Hanggang Ngayon." They end the number together.

Nina launches into her J.Lo medley, confidently showing off her terpsichorean skills. :0)- replies with her Destiny"s Child medley-with tentative moves, though. She may have concentrated more on the tricky tunes.

We also find her mumbling the words to most of her songs and spiels. Nina appears to be more self-assured. All those years she spent fronting various bands have paid off.

The rivals also compete in doing the best duet with guest artist Luke Mejares, who performs one number with each girl. Luke then announces that the show"s stars will next do Mariah Carey songs.

They sound more heartfelt than the original, and when they belt out "Butterfly" together, they are surprisingly restrained.

Luke rejoins the girls for Boyz2Men"s "Four Seasons of Loneliness" and "End of the Road." Jaya, who"s one of the celebrities in the audience, is persuaded to render an impromptu number, "Through the Fire."

:0)- and Nina finally cap the evening with the ballad "Only Hope" and a string of dance tunes, leveling off the competition in the process.

Both artists are clearly on their way to musical stardom. It"s up to them if they turn their competition into motivation. Rivalry, after all, has helped Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera become enduring pop stars. In the end, it"s the public that triumphs, because they get the best entertainment.

Yup! Caludine Barreto... she was with Raymart that time kc nga Ratsky. Nagulat din ako, di ko alam na fan sya ni Nina until i saw her applauding Nina, hehe! Tapos sumsigaw din sya, kc nga showdown talaga ang nangyari between Nina and :0)-. If i remember correctly ang title ng show na yan ay "Cold War"... most of her supporters na dumating ay mga relatives nya, mga taga-Center for Pop Music at iilang fans. Si :0)- yung maraming supporters non kaya dinaan ko na lang sa lakas ng sigaw, haha!
