Nina Live!  The Concert

Now it can be told!  Veni, vidi, vici:  Nina came, Nina saw, and Nina definitely conquered the Araneta Coliseum in an intimate concert that can truly be described as emotional and real.

Emotional because at times Nina was at a loss for words.  Trying to remember a list of firsts with this concert.  In more than one occasion, she was nearly teary-eyed as she talks to the crowd.  Several times she described the people's response as "overwhelming".

Real because Nina is simply herself in this concert.  Choosing from a vast repertoire of revivals from her three albums, she was at her very best - hitting higher notes, belting longer, and you will know she was having fun at the same time.  This is the Nina people around her know - that she's a sensitive and fun-loving soul.

Araneta Center was jampacked as cars weaved through the streets looking for parking spaces.  Lines were formed to enter the coliseum.  Friends, relatives, lovers, even newly met NSSians came together to support Nina, reinforcing that she really touches different lives (this line not sponsored by PLDT).

Araneta Coliseum was filled to the rafters as patron and lower box seats were sold out a month before.  Patron seats sold like hotcakes as row upon row were sold in the first few days of availability; in 4 days, reservations were up to Row L.  Upper Box A tickets were sold out a week before, while Upper Box B tickets were gobbled by late buyers.  General Admission was Warner's support for Nina as they gave away these tickets for free in CDs, contests and other promos.

The concert started just before 9PM, with the familiar "Let me know" ringing through the coliseum.  People in the patron section, specially those at the back and the middle aisle, suddenly all rushed into the middle, taking pictures from a wide variety of cellphone models and digital cameras.  Nina entered in a sexy blue outfit with a pink overlay and sang from the heart as she did throughout the concert.

Four more songs from the "Nina Live!" album followed - "Sweet Thing", "Sunlight", "Cool With You" and "Constantly".  This writer thought - this is really "Nina Live! - The Concert", but was I wrong.  Jerome, the latest addition to Warner's family of gifted musicians, strummed and plucked a riveting rendition of "Man in the Mirror", showcasing his mastery of the acoustic guitar.  If there were such a thing as maltreatment of a guitar, he would have been a prime candidate.  Nina changed to a yellow costume at this point.

Then came sentimental love songs.  Starting with a personal favorite from the "Nina Smile" album "I'll Always Stay This Way In Love", Nina smoothly transitioned to a duet with Nyoy Volante, the country's "Acoustic Balladeer" and a long rumored suitor.  Starting with "The Closer I Get To You", the crowd roared as there is a quiet attraction between the two singers.  Nyoy then followed with a solo "Nasaan Ka Na" - his signature song while Nina changed to an elegant fuschia gown.  And they capped the three-song segment with "Finally Found You" - a recent addition to their long list of duets that will really melt lovers' hearts, capped by a near-kiss as the duo sang using one microphone, just like in the "El Nino, La Nina" concerts.

Nina then sang two major hits from her "Nina Heaven" album - "Foolish Heart" and "Jealous", followed by a solo rendition of "Burn" - which should also be released as a single, in this writer's opinion.  A favorite from the "Uncovered Bar Tour" followed with "Bridges", displaying her mastery of notes and her unique, soulful voice.

Nina opened the Diane Warren medley with a short spiel saying how Diane's songs really helped her.  She sang "I'll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me", "Love Will Lead You Back", "Unbreak My Heart" and capped by a heart-stopping, emotional "I Don't Want To Be Your Friend".

R&B followed as Nina introduced South Border as the country's premier band.  First was "Ikaw Lang", Nina's first live collaboration with the band.  South Border then sang "Rainbow", after which the picked up the pace with their current hit "Baby Boy" with Nina again entering in a hot white outfit.  They ended their segment with a thumping, grinding "The Show".

What came up next will surprise many Nina fans - even rockers most especially Hale and Cueshe fans as Nina sang "The Day You Said Goodbye" and "Stay".  She finished the concert with "Love Moves in Mysterious Ways" and "I Love You Goodbye", snippets from the music video flashing onscreen - giving people who haven't seen the video even more reason to clamor to see it.  Ricky Ilacad, Managing Director of Warner Music Philippines, went up the stage to give Nina flowers and congratulated her (is it for a 6x platinum?)

As the audience shouted for more, Nina came back with her signature song "Through The Fire".  Patron viewers rushed towards the aisle and the sides to get pictures as confetti started raining down on the stage.  She ended the concert with what this writer feels will be her next signature song - "I Believe I Can Fly" - an emotionally charged, R&B/soul combination that is simply magnificent.

Nina truly gave her all in this one-of-a-kind concert that featured intimacy, emotions, fun and appreciation as she repeatedly thanked the audience for their support.  What's next for the Soul Siren?  The world.
