Screening

Official entries will undergo a screening process to check if they comply with the eligibility parameters set by the organizers. A set of screeners, along with a technical committee, will determine the sites' eligibility.

If the site violates any of the eligibility requirements (example: majority-owned and developed primarily by Filipinos), it will be disqualified at any time during the process. In case the winner is proven to have violated any of the eligibility requirements within thirty (30) days of the announcement of winners, the winner will be declared invalid and will be required to return the trophy/plaque and the prizes to the Philippine Web Awards organizers. The site that scored second will be declared the official winner.

The screening process also involves identifying a site according to its appropriate category. If the screeners decide that an entry does not belong to the category where it was submitted, they can disqualify the entry.

Semifinals

Using the four criteria, the judges will narrow down the screened entries to ten (10) semifinalists per category. A group of semifinals judges assigned by the organizers will evaluate all entries for this stage. They include Web developers, designers and artists. They are assigned categories they are familiar with. Judges are required to submit a list of sites that they are personally or professionally affiliated with to avoid any conflict of interest.

The average of the scores of each set of judges assigned to a common category will be taken. The top ten (10) for each category that meet the minimum average score, i.e., seven (7), will be declared the semifinalists (it is possible then to have less than 10 semifinalists). In case of a tie for 10th place, the judges will be asked to arrive at a consensus.

Before the list of semifinalists is announced, however, the organizers may choose to practice their prerogative to make final changes in the initial set of categories. Some categories may have too few qualified candidates, and these categories may either be merged with a related category or removed altogether. Other categories may be split into additional categories.

All semifinalists will qualify for the People's Choice Awards.

Pre-finals

After the list of semifinalists is announced, the judges will evaluate the top 10 sites of each category based on the criteria. Previous scores of the semifinalists will be disregarded and scoring will start from scratch.

The top five (5) semifinalists in each category will move on to the finals stage.

In case of a tie for fifth place, the judges will be asked to arrive at a consensus. Once the votes are tallied, the list of the top five (5) finalists for each category will be announced.

Finals

Judges for the finals will be chosen by the organizers. They include media practitioners, Web developers, artists, editors, and experts in their respective fields. The chosen judges are required to submit a list of sites that they are personally or professionally affiliated with to avoid any conflict of interest. The judges are selected based on their expertise in their respective fields.

Previous scores of the finalists will be disregarded. The judges will independently rate - based on our criteria - the finalists in their assigned categories. The scores of each set of judges assigned to a common category will be tallied and averaged by our auditors. In case of a tie for first place, the judges will be asked to arrive at a consensus. The finalist that garners the highest average score in each category will be declared the winner.

CRITERIA

Judges will rate entries based on four criteria: Content, Design, Usability and Functionality. The Awards organizers, after close consultations with Web designers, developers and Internet professionals, affirm that these four criteria are important in judging Web site excellence. Depending on the category, various weights for each criterion will be applied.

CONTENT

A flashy site has no real value if it has no content to offer. Content is not just text; it can be images, multimedia elements, or even a collection of tools, data or links. In considering content, judges are asked to determine if the content matches the goals and nature of the Web site. These determine the tone of writing, the frequency of updates, and the depth of information. Content should be informative, engaging, persuasive, useful, and/or entertaining, depending on the nature of the site. It should be well written, carefully checking grammar and spelling.

DESIGN

Design refers to appearance. It includes the use of graphical elements, such as images, color, white space and typography. Visual design is important in grabbing visitors' attention but it should not be at the expense of overall user experience. A flashy site may take too long to load fully that it defeats its purpose. The design can be restrained and even minimalist and still be considered good if the nature of the site calls for it. Like with other media, consistency and appropriateness play a part in determining what is good Web design.

USABILITY

Usability means proper organization, layout and navigation. As in building a house, a great site's blueprint sets the foundation. A well thought out information architecture - how content is organized and linked - enhances user experience, making it easy for visitors to navigate the site and find the needed information quickly and easily. A well designed, uncluttered page layout leads users to the information they need.

FUNCTIONALITY

Functionality enhances how a visitor uses the site. It includes optimized code, working scripts, and use of interactivity. It means fast loading of pages, live links, working forms, relevant search results, seamless transaction processing. It also means the proper use of plug-ins and multimedia. Interactive features engage the user to participate, which can be in the form of forums, chat rooms, polls, games and quizzes. Outstanding functionality is relevant and adds value; it is also as basic as making sure everything in the site works.

Bale ganito po kasi yan... may mga judges na magjudge ng mga sites.. then pagdating ng semifinals, if we qualify, automatic na kasama na tayo sa peoples' choice award. yun yung paramihan ng votes. As far as I know, not at this moment pa tayo magvote ate mdsmile... Will try to inform through this thread pag pasok na tayo sa semis. Smiley
