[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\'][span style=\'color:purple\']Brand new Nina [/span][/span]
By Eric S. Caruncho posted march '02
Inquirer News Service

HER videos and publicity photos make her out to be some slinky jazz vixen, but in the flesh -- sans make-up and MTV window dressing -- the singularly named songstress Nina looks to be all of 14 years of age (albeit an extremely well-developed 14). The effect is intensified by the fact that the petite charmer stands all of 5'1" (albeit an extremely well-proportioned 5'1").

Not to worry, pedophiles; she's well past the age of consent. Nina is actually 22, but she's definitely got that child-woman vibe down. If Nina were an anime character, she'd fit right in with those button-eyed cuties of "Bubblegum Crisis," or "You're Under Arrest."

Seemingly out of nowhere, Nina burst onto the pop scene late last year with "Heaven," the first single and video from her debut album of the same name. At a time when the OPM charts were dominated by acts who were not primarily singers (the Sexbomb Girls, Patricia Javier), "Heaven" seemed to go against the prevailing tide. The music was jazzy lounge pop, with just a hint of R & B flava. The lyrics were also in English, which conventional marketing wisdom considered the kiss of death as far as mass sales were concerned. In short, the package was too sophisto for the "Eat Bulaga" crowd.

Still, "Heaven" made enough of a splash. The album itself was a canny studio concoction. The material -- drawn from Warner Music Philippines' considerable vaults (one of the perks of being a global entertainment conglomerate) -- was calculated to please the broadest swath of the FM radio demographic. It was mellow enough for the lite jazz heads, had a bit of R & B and club beats thrown in for the show band set, and for good measure, a cover of Steve Perry's MOR evergreen "Foolish Heart" for those people who like "revivals." The songs could be slotted into any playlist: Top 40, lite jazz, adult contemporary, OPM. The Sexbomb Girls might have the biggest slice of the pie, but "Heaven" was going for what was left. (Without a hint of irony, the press release for "Heaven" said: "The local scene receives the semblance of foreign standards." To put it more bluntly, it sounded "imported.")

A second single, "2nd Floor," sung in Tagalog/English, didn't pan out. But the third time proved to be the charm: single number three, "Jealous" -- the kind of senti ballad that Pinoys go for -- garnered heavy FM airplay. The video for "Jealous" also went on heavy rotation on the OPM programs of MTV and MYX. Nina knew she had it made when she went to the mall, and the fruit vendor told her, "You look like that singer Nina."

Nina may seem like an instant smash, but nothing could be further from the truth.<Through it all, Nina boned up on her accountancy course. During gigs, she would bring her books and notebooks to the band room to study during breaks. Mornings she would struggle to stay awake in class, with a slug of Lipovitan to keep her caffeinated through the school day.

"I was motivated to study because I knew that if I flunked, that would be it for my singing," she recalls. By the time she graduated, Nina was a seasoned veteran, and any thoughts she might have had of pursuing a law degree faded into the background. In its place, another dream had sprouted: a solo singing career.
While working the club circuit, she put together a three-song demo, which included her cover of the club staple "Foolish Heart." She sent it to Warner Music Philippines.<The novelty of signing autographs still hasn't worn off, and she is still surprised by the fact that she seems to attract as many girl fans as the expected boys. Thanks to her seasoning, she's handling it like a pro. She still does regular gigs with Essence backing her up in places like Suburbia and Aruba, and tries to find time in her busy schedule to squeeze in a gym workout and a John Irving paperback once in a while. She still hasn't managed to squeeze in time for a boyfriend, though.
"No time for love, love lang sa career," she says.
Fine by me.
