Nina
Artist: Nina
Record Label: Warner Philippines
Released: 2006

4 out of 5 stars!

Nina's giving her fans a break from her diva image. Enter a hip and funky soul siren, with great upbeat songs. Nina's new self-titled album under Warner Records is sure to captivate the hearts of her fans, and they're definitely in for something new.

The carrier single, "I Do," starts off sounding like a ballad, but breaks into beat after a few lines. Nina's rendition would leave you head-bobbing and swaying to the hip rhythms.

"Ooh Boy" has that techno touch in the intro, with a similar feel as the previous track. In fact, this song also has "I Do" in most of its lines, giving a slight sense of redundancy.

"Where is Love" tones down and sounds a little more laid-back and easy.

The following song, "I Can't Make You Love Me," tones down even more to remind us of Nina's innate ability to regale her listeners with heartwarming ballads.

"I Need Your Love" sounds light and casual, with a great blending of voices in the chorus. Nina's soft, mellifluous voice adds a sultry sensation to the song.

In "I Didn't Mean to Make You Mine" and "Love is Contagious," Nina continues to amaze us with colorful vocals and amazing lyrics.

Nina renders "What If" rather effortlessly, albeit the song's heavily emotional message. The subtle riffs add color to this wonderful surefire hit.

"Is It Over" cuts deep with its meaningful lyrics, and will definitely appeal to the heartbroken.

One of the album's best cuts, "Someday," will leave listeners wishful in love, with Nina's sincere, emotional vocals that certainly befit the song. Combine these with the equally beautiful melody and lyrics, and you have one of the country's top hits today.

Goldilocks' promotional song, "Araw Mo," is a little extra for Nina's fans, although it is quite unusual to finish an album with a birthday song, isn't it? Warner seems to have quite a penchant for adding their artists' promotional songs on their albums (Christian Bautista's "Nais Ko" for Greenwich was added to his 2nd album, "Completely."), and although this may seem awkward to many, Nina's fans are surely thankful for having the luxury to hear the song over and over again.

Although Nina took another shot at an album that is composed mostly of revivals, she does not disappoint us with the various genres of tracks compiled in this great offering. We're proud of how Nina has grown as a singer, and let's hope she continues to bring us even more great hits in the future!
