Nina sings Manilow

Fresh from her recent triumphs in the concert scene, Nina returns to the Music Museum for a series of shows featuring the music of none other than the man Rolling Stone magazine dubbed "The Showman of Our Generation: Barry Manilow."

The hits that made Nina a household name - song like "Foolish Heart," "Jealous," "Loving You," "Smile," "A Girl Can Dream," "Can't Say I Love You," "Love Moves (In Mysterious Ways)," "Constantly," "Sweet Thing," "Stay (With Me)," "Through The Fire," and her latest "I'll Always Love You" - will be conspicuous in their absence.

Titled "Very Manilow," this show will be a night of firsts. Not only is it bassist Soc Mina's first stint as musical director for such a project, but it is also the first time that Nina will stage a concept show.

But why Barry Manilow?

"Kasi grabe ang following niya," Nina says, referring to the millions of fans that call themselves "Fanilows" - a nickname that originated in the 1970s when Barry's carreer was at its peak. "Plus there are people who may not really like him, but they know and love some of his songs."

"Very Manilow" will feature Nina singing some of those songs - with a twist. Some of Barry's biggest hits -like "Copacabana (At The Copa)," the tragic story of the showgirl Lola and her bartender lover Tony - will be given a new, R&B/Hip-hop flavor.

The 1978 hit "Can't Smile Without You" will also be given the remix treatment - from a moody pop ballad, it will be transformed into a bouncy, reggae-flavored ditty.

Other songs will be made into duets to be performed by Nina and a guest. She will be joined by several male singers - Christian Bautista on the 2nd and 3rd of June; Jed Madela on 10th and 16th; Nyoy Volante on 17th and 30th; and Troy Montero on the 23rd and 24th - in paying tribute to various highlights in the Barry Manilow songbook. Other guest are Groove Manila and Boses.

But his stellar career in the music industry - as an arranger, a composer, performer, and producer - isn't all that Barry has to his name.

His illustrious career in music began when he became Bette Midler's arranger, musical director, and pianist in 1972. In that same year, he signed with Bell Records (later Artista Records), and began work on his debut album.

He released "Mandy" in 1974 and it became a huge hit, launching a career that now boasts of over 50 hits, among them "Even Now," "I Write The Songs," "Ready To Take A Chance Again," "Somewhere Down The Road," "Weekend In New England," and many more.

Since then, his unparalleled career has covered nearly every aspect of the entertainment industry. He has won several awards for his work in film, television, and theater, an is showing no signs of slowing down.
